Coagulation Changes with intravenous Administration of Fat after Blocking the RES

Abstract: SummaryRabbits were treated in 3 groups : Group A received 20 ml/kg Lipofundin, group B received 150 mg/kg india ink and 20 ml/kg Lipofundin, group C received 150 mg/kg india ink and 20 ml/kg isotonic glucose. Group A and B showed a decrease of activity of the factors II, V, VII, serumcomplex and a decrease of the platelet count. The changes were more pronounced in group B and 6 of 8 animals of this group died after the infusion. In group A only 1 animal died. All controll animals (group C) survived. There wer… Show more

“…Contrary to tests carried out with Lipomul® [7], Lipofundin® [9], infusion with long-chain fatty acids [3], and alimentary lipaemia [13] none of our cases revealed any evidence suggesting thrombocytopenia associated with Intralipid® infusions. Considering these results and those of others [4], we assume that the infusion of Intralipid® emulsions is a safe procedure without the risk of hypercoagulability.…”

“…Lipofundin®, an emulsion of cottonseed oil, when administered to rabbits (2 g oil/kg body weight), decreased the circulating platelet count significantly, but produced an inconsistent effect on platelet retention in the rotating bulb [72]. When added to blood in vitro it invariably gave a significant in crease in platelet aggregation [109].…”
