During his journey on the Beagle, Darwin observed the uniformity in the elevation of coastal Eastern Patagonia along more than 2000 km. More than one century later, the sequences of Quaternary shorelines of eastern Patagonia have been described and their deposits dated but not yet interpreted in terms of geodynamics. Consequently, we i) mapped the repartition of the Quaternary coastal sequences in Argentinean Patagonia, ii) secured accurate altitudes of shoreline angles associated with erosional morphologies (i.e. marine terraces and notches), iii) took into account previous chrono-stratigraphical interpretations in order to calculate mean uplift rates since~440 ka (MIS 11) and proposed age ranges for the higher and older features (up to~180 m), and iv) focused on the Last Interglacial Maximum terrace (MIS 5e) as the best constrained marine terrace (in terms of age and altitude) in order to use it as a tectonic benchmark to quantify uplift rates along the entire passive margin of Eastern South America. Our results show that the eastern Patagonia uplift is constant through time and twice the uplift of the rest of the South American margin. We suggest that the enhanced uplift along the eastern Patagonian coast that interested Darwin during his journey around South America on the Beagle could originate from the subduction of the Chile ridge and the associated dynamic uplift.

Although the global evolution of the sea-level during the Holocene is controversial (see for example Tooley, 1993;Fleming et al, 1998;Lambeck and Chappel, 2001), different authors have identified in several parts of the world a maximum Holocene high-stand that took place between approximately 6000 to 8000 yr BP (e.g., Tooley, 1993;Codignotto and Aguirre, 1993;Bezerra et al, 1998;Rostami et al, 2000;Dabrio et al, 2000) and it is coincidental with the cited values for the highest Holocene stand in Chile.…”

A buried Holocene marine bed was discovered upon drilling a water well in Algarrobo (33°22'S), located on the coast of central Chile. Radiocarbon dating of a wood fragment found within the deposit indicates an age of 6450 cal yr BP. The top of this bed, 0.25 m-thick, was reached at an elevation of 3.8 m above mean sea level. This bed contains abundant monospecific faunas of foraminifers (Ammonia tepida) and ostracodes (Cyprideis beaconensis), indicative of deposition in a very shallow, transitional marine environment. Palynologic analysis reveals a Chenopodiaceae-dominated (~70%) assemblage, indicating a relatively arid and warm climate.

Barriers, barrier islands and spits characterise low-lying coasts. However, they can grow along erosive coasts where there is a constant supply of sand, gravel, or both. At the Argentine coast, sandy barriers characterise the template coast of Buenos Aires. The availability of gravel at the Patagonian and Tierra del Fuego coasts induces the formation beach-ridge plains that can derived into coarse-grained spits. The morphology of these spits obeys to the basin depth and the availability of sediment. Recurved spits signify that the beach drift is locally modified by the action of waves or sediment-supply shortages. Some spits are today subject to local erosion (cannibalisation) that compensates these sediment deficits. Barriers and spits are ideal to locate harbours, marinas or touristic (resort) villages. However, the freshwater volumes inside their bodies are limited, even in areas where rain-fed aquifers have plenty of capacity. In this sense, resort villages are limited in their urban sprawl and planners should foresee these resource-based limitations.
