Coastal vulnerabilities under the deliberation of stakeholders: The case of two French sandy beaches

Abstract: a b s t r a c tCoastal environment systems are always exposed to natural phenomena such as erosion and submersion, and climate change is likely to increase these phenomena and their related vulnerability. The decision whether or not to protect the coast from an extreme weather event is not only based on technical data, but must also take into account its social acceptability. The involvement of stakeholders thus appears as a risk governance option. By using a scenario (both physical and socio-economic) and wor… Show more

“…With regard to adaptation, the discussion particularly focused on the challenges of adaptation and opportunities for the implementation of adaptation strategies. The methodological approach selected for this study, which involved stakeholders' interviewees and a participatory workshop, has previously been used in climate change adaptation research [42,43]. Ethical approval was sought and obtained through the University of the West of Scotland procedure.…”

“…In addition, some studies have focused on the factors driving urbanisation, including the impacts of land market and urban planning policies, which can orient coastal development (Razin 1998;Malvàrez Garcia et al 2003;Crawford 2007;Tang 2008;Abrantes et al 2016). In recent years, coastal submersion and relocation strategies have begun to appear in the scientific literature (Duvat et al 2013;Meur-Férec 2014;Poumadère et al 2015;Rey-Valette et al 2015). Yet despite the number of studies and fields of research, there is a lack of integrated multidisciplinary studies of urban dynamics and their environmental impacts.…”

“…http://dx.doi.org/10.21615/cesp.14.1.5 Communication by public actors to residents often results in "expert" speech to "audiences" (Barnett et al, 2012), thus establishing a hierarchical relation between the two groups. For public actors, communication campaigns exist to compensate an alleged lack of information among the inhabitants (Bauer et al, 2007), while integrating territorial issues (Poumadère et al, 2015). In general, the official communication tends to be positioned as a hegemonic discourse (Castro & Mouro, 2016) conveying knowledge which should be shared and applied by all.…”
