Coccolith Sr/Ca is a robust temperature and growth rate indicator that withstands dynamic microbial interactions

Abstract: Coccolithophores are a highly diverse group of single-celled marine algae belonging to the haptophyte clade (Jordan & Chamberlain, 1997;de Vargas et al., 2007). They evolved over 200 million years ago and have flourished in the world oceans ever since (Bown, 1985;Mai et al., 1997). Their name is derived from the elaborate CaCO 3 platelets, termed coccoliths, that cover the algal cell (Young et al., 1992). The coccoliths are produced intracellularly in a designated compartment termed the coccolith vesicle and a… Show more

“…Although less complex than algal exudates, this approach simplifies the process of gaining mechanistic insights by overcoming the chemical complexity of exudates. Altogether, our findings highlight the multifaceted role of algal exudates, In this algal strain, only roughly 20% of cells are calcified 88 . Scale bar corresponds to 5 μm.…”

“…Previous sediment-trap records in the Sargasso Sea and Arabian Sea 30 , and in the Eastern Mediterranean 32 have already provided relevant indications about nutrient limitation of coccolithophore in situ productivity versus coccolith export efficiency out of the photic zone based on coccolith Sr/Ca ratios. Auliaherliaty et al 33 further demonstrate that Sr/Ca are not impacted by bacterial influences on algal physiology, thereby reinforcing the robustness of this ratio as a productivity proxy.
