Airlines face the imperative of resource management to curtail costs, necessitating the solution of several optimization problems such as flight planning, fleet assignment, aircraft routing, and crew scheduling. These problems present some challenges. The first pertains to the common practice of addressing these problems independently, potentially leading to locally optimal outcomes due to their interconnected nature. The second challenge lies in the inherent uncertainty associated with parameters like demand and non-cruise time. On the other hand, airlines can employ a strategy known as codesharing, wherein they operate shared flights, in order to minimize these challenges. In this study, we introduce a novel mathematical model designed to optimize flight planning, fleet assignment, and aircraft routing decisions concurrently, while accommodating for codesharing. This model is formulated as a three-stage non-linear mixed-integer problem, with stochastic parameters representing the demand and non-cruise time. For smaller-scale problems, optimization software can effectively solve the model. However, as the number of flights increases, conventional software becomes inadequate. Moreover, considering a wide array of scenarios for stochastic parameters leads to more robust results; however, it is not enabled because of the limitations of optimization software. In this work, we introduce two new simulation-based metaheuristic algorithms for solving large-dimensional problems, collectively called “simheuristic.” These algorithms integrate the Monte Carlo simulation technique into Simulated Annealing and Cuckoo Search. We have applied these simheuristic algorithms to various problem samples of different flight sizes and scenarios. The results demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed modeling and solution approaches in efficiently addressing flight scheduling, fleet assignment, and aircraft routing problems within acceptable timeframes.

Purpose The proposed model aims to consider the flying hours as a criterion to initiate maintenance operation. Based on this condition, aircraft must be checked before flying hours threshold is met. After receiving maintenance service, the model ignores previous flying hours and the aircraft can keep on flying until the threshold value is reached again. Moreover, the model considers aircraft age and efficiency to assign them to flights. Design/methodology/approach The aircraft maintenance routing problem (AMRP), as one of the most important problems in the aviation industry, determines the optimal route for each aircraft along with meeting maintenance requirements. This paper presents a bi-objective mixed-integer programming model for AMRP in which several criteria such as aircraft efficiency and ferrying flights are considered. Findings As the solution approaches, epsilon-constraint method and a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), including a new initializing algorithm, are used. To verify the efficiency of NSGA-II, 31 test problems in different scales are solved using NSGA-II and GAMS. The results show that the optimality gap in NSGA-II is less than 0.06%. Finally, the model was solved based on real data of American Eagle Airlines extracted from Kaggle datasets. Originality/value The authors confirm that it is an original paper, has not been published elsewhere and is not currently under consideration of any other journal.

A indústria de transporte aéreo de passageiros é caracterizada por ciclos de expansão e retração capazes de induzir transformações não só no padrão de competição, mas também na estrutura de mercado a partir de fusões, aquisições e alianças entre concorrentes. Um tipo comum de aliança no setor aéreo é o acordo de compartilhamento de voos (codeshare). Além das vantagens para as empresas, os acordos de codeshare trazem benefícios intrínsecos ao consumidor. Sob a ótica concorrencial, contudo, podem ter efeitos negativos ao bem-estar social na medida em que reduzam a competição em dado mercado e permitam o exercício conjunto de poder de mercado das companhas aéreas engajadas em um codeshare. Neste contexto, os acordos de codeshare requerem a análise e aprovação de agências reguladores e/ou de defesa da concorrência em diversas jurisdições. Tais análises são complexas e custosas. Assim, considerando que os acordos de codeshare são recorrentes, a presente nota tem por objetivos discutir o enquadramento dos acordos de codeshare na legislação brasileira que trata das infrações contra a ordem econômica e contribuir com a identificação de condições tais que, se presentes no momento da operação, permitiriam à conclusão de que dado acordo de codeshare não possui efeitos lesivos à concorrência e ao bem-estar social.
