Coelomycete systematics with special reference to Colletotrichum

Abstract: Coelomycete systematics with special reference to ColletotrichumImperfecti, which is polyphyletic, artifi cial, and untenable or redundant (Taylor 1995). Form-taxa are classifi ed solely on their conidial ontogeny, morphology, or ecology. Such classifi catory systems are exclusive, restrictive, of limited use, and not indicative of clear relationships among taxa. Primarily, they serve nomenclature and identifi cation purposes only.Abstract Morphological and molecular data of coelomycetes are analyzed. Taxonomi… Show more

“…Identification of Colletotrichum species has been difficult due to the lack of reliable morphological features and confused, ambiguous species boundaries (Hyde et al 2009a, b;Cai et al 2009). Difficulties in recognising Colletotrichum species has resulted from having a few and variable morphological characters, widespread host ranges and pathogenicity, lost specimens or type specimens in poor condition and incorrectly named sequences in NCBI (Freeman et al 2000;Du et al 2005;Thaung 2008;Crouch et al 2009a, b;Damm et al 2009;Cai et al 2009). …”

“…The early taxonomic system for Colletotrichum based on morphology and host–plant association was deficient and to a great extent hindered research on species diversity [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. It is of great significance to improve the accuracy of plant pathogen identification for effective control of plant diseases [ 26 , 31 ].…”

“…Furthermore, Pestalotiopsis species exhibit a wide variety of relationships with their hosts. They have been reported to be saprobes, endophytes and facultative pathogens (Hu et al 2007;Metz et al 2000), are ubiquitous in distribution and are found on a wide range of substrates (Jeewon et al 2003;Thaung 2008). Also, they are not host-specific (Hu et al 2007) and can thrive over a wide range of temperatures, pH and matric potentials (Hopkins and McQuilken 2000;McQuilken and Hopkins 2004), indicating that they are adapted to a range of environmental conditions.…”
