Coenzyme Q10 and Heart Failure

Abstract: Abstract-Heart failure (HF) with either preserved or reduced ejection fraction is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Evidence-based therapies are often limited by tolerability, hypotension, electrolyte disturbances, and renal dysfunction. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may represent a safe therapeutic option for patients with HF. CoQ10 is a highly lipophilic molecule with a chemical structure similar to vitamin K. Although being a common component of cellular membranes, CoQ10's most prominent role is to … Show more

“…In humans, CoQ 10 deficiency has been implicated in various diseases involving muscle and neural development, with the severity of the disease correlated with the acuteness of the CoQ 10 shortfall [18]. These diseases may manifest in conditions such as central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, myopathy or cardiomyopathy, among others [1922]. The oxidative damage associated with impaired CoQ 10 function has also been implicated in numerous clinical phenotypes [18, 2325].…”

“…When considering drug interactions, since CoQ10 has some structural similarity to vitamin K, it may increase the metabolism of warfarin through selective interaction with cytochrome P450 enzymes (A. Sharma, Fonarow, Butler, Ezekowitz, & Felker, 2016). As a consequence, CoQ10 may reduce the response to warfarin, causing difficulties in achieving adequate anticoagulation in patients taking CoQ10 and warfarin.…”
