Cognitive function in early psychosis patients from a lower middle-income country

Abstract: Reduced cognitive performance was found across multiple domains in Pakistani EP patients, which suggests that impaired cognitive performance is homogenous in patients with schizophrenia, regardless of ethnicity.

“…There are many barriers to successful uptake of telepsychiatry services including accessibility (e.g., access to internet and smartphones), user ability, provider competency, as well as language and cultural appropriateness (Strudwick et al, 2020). Patients with schizophrenia are known to have cognitive impairment (Husain et al, 2018), which may hinder their ability to engage with telepsychiatry. People experiencing homelessness may also be disproportionally excluded from accessing appropriate care and interventions if largely delivered virtually.…”

“…The role of premorbid IQ in longer response latency, and particularly with aberrant salience, could suggest that the psychotic process has begun when some indicators of cognitive deterioration appear [63,64], especially the relationship between positive symptomatology and working memory [65] or processing speed [66]. The role of the premorbid IQ variable as a mediator in IR response latency has to be related to executive functioning problems in persons vulnerable, at least, to developing psychosis [67].…”

“…A social desirability score was computed using the sum of the responses to three items (10, 16, 22) of the CTQ-SF minimization-denial subscale (Church et al, 2017). Given the extensive literature linking psychotic disorder to social and economic disadvantage and poor cognitive (Czepielewski et al, 2022; Husain et al, 2018) and psychosocial functioning (Izquierdo et al, 2021), parental SES (Hollingshead & Redlich, 2007) was also considered as a covariate.…”
