Coherent Systems for Low-Cost 10 Gb/s Optical Access Networks

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective coherent 10 Gb/s system for passive optical networks, exploiting off-the-shelf DFB lasers and a phase-diversity receiver based on a simple 3 & times; 3 fiber coupler. Since the system uses a simple amplitude-shift keying format, no complex electronic processing is required and there is no need of frequency/phase stabilization of the local oscillator, whose frequency can change by more than & plusmn;1 GHz with no significant performance variation. The system has a … Show more

“…In order to simplify the coherent transceiver architectures for both OLT and ONU using PI receivers, several works have been reported in [34]- [39]. As shown in [34] by means of extensive numerical simulations, a polarization-diversity detector scheme for a broadcast network based on 2 × 1 multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing OFDM system has been investigated theoretically.…”

“…COCONUT project has explored different solution for coherent ONUs. COCONUT receiver is based on simple 3x3 fiber couple with polarization independent operation [78] or simplified polarization heterodyne receivers [79]. COCONUT transmitters are based on Distributed Feed-Back (DFB) lasers which can operate as ASK mode [78] or DPSK mode [79].…”

“…A LO laser enters at 45 o to a PBS, splitting it into two orthogonal components with the same amplitude, and the incoming signal is sent directly to one of the photodiodes. It has been experimentally demonstrated for 1.25 and 10 Gb/s LR WDM-PONs using amplitude-shift keying (ASK) signalling, providing loss budgets of 48 dB and 38 dB at a transmission distance over 66 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) in [17] and [18], respectively. The main advantage of this low-cost receiver is that the signal can be demodulated using basic analogue processing requiring no DSP or ADC.…”
