Cohort study of diagnostic delay in the clinical pathway of patients with chronic wounds in the primary care setting

Abstract: ObjectivesExact wound diagnosis is essential for successful wound management and a holistic care of the patient suffering from a wound. Wound management has been traditionally seen as a nursing area, but this can lead to considerable delays in wound diagnostics. A diagnostic delay has been recognised as an element of diagnostic error, which, in turn, affects patient safety. The aim of this cohort study was to examine diagnostic delays of chronic wound within primary care.SettingA specialised diagnostic unit, a… Show more

“…This case obviously missed the best opportunity for treatment for DF. Longer pre‐hospital decision delays can lead to more severe disease and more complications or a more stressful experience (Ahmajärvi et al., 2022 ). It would aggravate the deterioration of DF, affect the life quality of patients, increase patient adverse events and add financial burden to both family and society.…”

“…Evidence demonstrates that 41% of VLU patients never got diagnosed 6 and if they got diagnosed there is a delay from wound appearance to the first evaluation by a physician of 8 days (IQR 1-32 days, range 0-314 days). 49 A lack of clear diagnostic reduce confidence in the outcome and lead to a risk of over-or under-estimating the prevalence or incidence.…”

“…Chronic wounds are a huge burden on the individual's quality of life (QoL) and healthcare system (1)(2)(3). Right and early diagnostics of chronic wounds is essential for successful wound management (4,5); however, there is a dearth of literature describing the outcomes of wound healing related to the timing and accuracy of diagnostics.…”
