Coital Urinary Incontinence Induced by Impairment of the Dorsal Nerve of the Clitoris in Rats

Abstract: These results suggest that the pudendal nerve is an important neural pathway in the convergence and crosstalk of female urogenital neural circuits, and genital deafferentation may be a causal factor of coital urinary incontinence. Rats with bilateral transection of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris may serve as an animal model of coital incontinence.

“…Stretching nerve injury may also decrease microtubules and tau protein, important elements in axonal function (51). DNC and MBSP stretching due to VD may induce sexual and urinary dysfunction, since denervation of the clitoris induces signs of coital urinary incontinence (5) and damage of the EUS innervation induced signs of urinary incontinence in rats (6,29,42).…”

“…Mechanostimulation of the vagina, rectum, and perigenital skin induces contraction of the pubococcygeus, bulbospongiosus, ischiocavernosus, rhabdobsphincter, and external anal sphincter (EAS) . These viscero‐ and somato‐motor reflexes may be activated during normal pelvic functions such as micturition, defecation, copulation and parturition, and damage to the afferent or efferent reflex pathways are factors associated with urinary, fecal, or sexual dysfunctions …”

“…3 These viscero-and somato-motor reflexes may be activated during normal pelvic functions such as micturition, defecation, copulation and parturition, and damage to the afferent or efferent reflex pathways are factors associated with urinary, fecal, or sexual dysfunctions. 4,5 Innervation of pelvic and perineal regions arises from the lumbosacral spinal cord, and the nerve fibers reach their target travelling in the pelvic and pudendal (PDN) nerves. 3 These nerves may be damaged during pelvic surgeries and parturition, compromising pelvic functions.…”

“…En effet, en causant une faiblesse du plancher pelvien associée à une atteinte du nerf pudendal, ces neuropathies entrainaient une diminution de la pression de clôture urétrale, une hyperactivité détrusorienne et une altération du sphincter externe. Cruz et al (37) ont montré sur des rats ayant eu une dénervation bilatérale du nerf pudendal, que 67% des femelles expulsaient des urines après l'éjaculation du mâle.…”
