Collaborative Governance and Public Administration Effectiveness in South Africa Through a Multidisciplinary Approach

Abstract

This chapter presents a systematic literature review analyzing the role of collaborative governance in enhancing public administration effectiveness in South Africa. Given the complex socio-political landscape, collaborative governance is essential for improving public service delivery and advancing the public good. The review synthesizes academic literature from various fields, including administrative law, political science, sociology, economics, and management studies, to offer a comprehensive multidisciplinary perspective. It identifies key public administration models in South Africa, examining how they facilitate inter-institutional cooperation and address community needs. The findings indicate that effective collaborative governance correlates with improved public service efficiency, equity, and fairness. Challenges such as bureaucratic inertia and lack of transparency are discussed, with policy reform recommendations to promote inclusive governance practices.
