Collagen Promotes Higher Adhesion, Survival and Proliferation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Abstract: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can differentiate into several cell types and are desirable candidates for cell therapy and tissue engineering. However, due to poor cell survival, proliferation and differentiation in the patient, the therapy outcomes have not been satisfactory. Although several studies have been done to understand the conditions that promote proliferation, differentiation and migration of MSC in vitro and in vivo, still there is no clear understanding on the effect of non-cellular bio molecules. … Show more

“…The optimum concentration of alginate used in our experiment caused the formation of suitable pore size, promoting the better supply of nutrients and cell transverse through shell membrane which was confirmed by SEM imaging (Yao et al, ). The existence of membrane pores in alginate‐gelatin microcapsules is importance for inward and outward diffusion of HUVECs and components in aqueous phase (Somaiah et al, ). Cell attachment to protein matrix per se induces signaling pathways, essential steps for the dynamic growth of cells.…”

“…These systems are convenient for downstream analyses, but lack the complexity of the native cellular milieu. To incorporate cell–ECM interactions within these platforms, TCP is often coated with purified ECM components (e.g., collagens, laminin, or fibronectin), which have been shown to mediate cell behavior . However, these simplified models lack the complex ultrastructure and biochemical composition of the native ECM, which may limit the translatability of the findings from in vitro to in vivo systems.…”

“…This is mainly because the JBNT/FN Nano-Matrix are morphologically mimicking ECM, which F I G U R E 2 Demonstration for the self-assembled process of the Nano-matrix. Collagens have been shown to promote higher adhesion, survival and proliferation of MSCs (Somaiah et al, 2015). ECM determines tissue construction by providing a scaffold for cell adhesion (Singh & Schwarzbauer, 2012).…”
