Collective mode properties in a paired fullerene-ion plasma

Abstract: A pair-ion plasma without electrons consisting of C60+ and C60- is generated through the processes of electron-impact ionization, electron attachment, and magnetic filtering. Properties of electrostatic modes propagating along magnetic-field lines are experimentally investigated by externally exciting them with two types of electrodes. It is found that four kinds of wave modes exist and a frequency spectrum of phase lag between the density fluctuations of C60+ and C60- is unique in comparison with ordinary ele… Show more

“…2-4, the modes are initiated by a cylindric exciter at one end of the chamber, and they also appear to propagate almost parallel to the magnetic field vector, i.e., they may include a ͑small͒ wave number component in the perpendicular direction as well, as commented in Ref. 4.…”

“…In the experiments [1][2][3][4][5] due to the specific filtering mentioned above, only pair ions are collected in the chamber, and it is believed that electrons are generally absent. The arguments supporting this opinion are convincing and, hence, we accept the mentioned filtering as a fact.…”

“…1 Efforts have also been made to produce PI plasma of hydrogen ions (H þ and H À ). 2 A series of experiments has been performed to produce pair-ion plasmas [1][2][3][4][5] and this activity has generated a lot of interest from theoreticians in this area. As a matter of fact, a few theoreticians 6 have tried to explain the observations of Ref.…”
