Collimated Beam FMCW Radar for Vital Sign Patient Monitoring

Abstract: Patient monitoring of vital signals such as breathing rhythm and heart beat rate can be done remotely by the use of a radar system. This approach is advantageous since it does not require any contact with the patient. Obviously contactless monitoring results in a more comfortable situation for the patient, and in occasions it is almost mandatory as in the case of heavy burnt or newborn patients. Moreover, additional information such movement patterns are also available. A 120 GHz FMCW radar is described with s… Show more

“…The FMCW radar can measure small movements as the signal is modulated. The respiration rate detector with FMCW performs the measurement based on the variation of the phases due to the chest displacement [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. Initially, frequency analysis was applied to estimate the distance between the subject and the FMCW radar.…”

“…An operating frequency band is one of the most important parameters in radar-based heartbeat monitoring. For example, many recent studies use low-frequency CW radar at 2.4-2.5 GHz [21], [28], [32] [44], and 122 GHz [45].…”

“…Vital signs mainly include heart rate, respiratory rate. It can be used to assist doctors in treatment, daily family health monitoring, morbid respiratory pattern monitoring and sleep quality evaluation [1][2][3]. It is not easily affected by temperature, humidity, working environment and other factors, which not only provides a non-invasive and convenient means of detecting vital signs, but also makes special scene applications possible.…”
