Color 3D Printing: Theory, Method, and Application

Abstract: Our research team proposes a colored manufacturing technology with a layer-bylayer printing process. Using digital inkjet printing in layer-by-layer printing color graphics, a further low-cost color 3D Printing (3DP) technology can be developed. It can provide an integrated way to prototype and reproduce 3D objects, from concept to design and manufacturing. Ultimately, with fast graphics printing method, it guarantees a feasible way to further promote cultural and creative products.

“…This will also impact tangible characteristics, such as thermal properties and texture, which could potentially deceive the handler. Colour printing for optical properties is also limited, as many modern printers only utilise a single material, particularly affordable fused filament fabrication (FFF) solutions (Gibson et al, 2015;Chua and Leong, 2015;Chen et al, 2016). Some full-colour FFF methods are beginning to reach the market though (XYZ Printing, 2018).…”

“…Subsequently, the concept of full-color 3D printing was introduced and the corresponding paper-based, powder-based, and plastic-based full-color 3D printers were developed and released [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Full-color 3D printing not only refers to multi-color printing but also emphasizes more accurate color reproduction of color 3D prints [ 7 ].…”

“…Along with the achieved shape and geometric realization, the color realization of the printed parts has become significantly tempting, especially for people in the fields of art, reproduction, mapping, medicine, education, etc. [6][7][8] There are some commercially available full-color 3D printers in the binder jetting (BJ), sheet lamination, and material jetting (MJ) categories, classified by ISO/ASTM 52900 [9].…”
