Colour vision and retinal nerve fibre layer photography in patients with an Acrysof® Natural intraocular lens

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To study colour vision and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) photographs in patients with an Acrysof Ò Natural intraocular lens (IOL). Methods: We carried out a randomized double-blind study. An Acrysof Ò Natural IOL (model SN60AT) was implanted in 25 eyes of 19 patients and an Acrysof Ò IOL (model SA60AT) was implanted in 27 eyes of 18 control patients. The patients returned for colour vision tests and fundus photography 1-6 months after the surgery. Results: Standard pseudoisochromatic plate… Show more

“…34 Color vision was evaluated with a screening Ishihara test, which did not show any marked color vision abnormalities between the groups. Many other studies have confirmed that no significant difference in color vision is expected between eyes with a UV-light filtering IOL and a blue-light filtering IOL, 25,31,35 although recent meta-analysis showed that color vision with blue-light filtering IOLs demonstrated some compromise in the blue-light spectrum under mesopic light conditions. 15 However, in this study, the ordering FM 100-hue test showed very high ESs in both groups, with no significant difference between the groups.…”

“…Some reservations regarding color perception, contrast sensitivity, and scotopic vision with blue-light-filering IOLs exist. Several studies have showed that the built-in blue-light filter of 2 of the IOL types, AcrySof Natural and AF-1(UY) YA 60-BB, does not affect color perception (Mester U, Behr JP, Kaymak H. ''Intraindividuelle Untersuchung von Farbwahrnehmung und Kontrastempfindlichkeit bei [26][27][28] A multicenter clinical trial with 298 patients also demonstrated that the AcrySof Natural IOL impaired neither color perception nor contrast sensitivity. 29 Certain blue-light-filtering IOLs may even improve contrast sensitivity, as chromatic aberration is slightly decreased.…”

“…The potential negative effect on color vision 20,34 was not confirmed in clinical studies in patients with yellow IOLs. 17,[35][36][37][38][39] On the other hand, IOL exchange due to disturbing changes in subjective color perception has been reported. 40 Two patients in our study reported different subjective color perception between the 2 eyes but did not opt for IOL exchange.…”
