Combination treatment by 10 600 nm ablative fractional carbon dioxide laser and narrowband ultraviolet B in refractory nonsegmental vitiligo: a prospective, randomized half-body comparative study

Abstract: This study suggests that fractional CO(2) laser therapy followed by NB-UVB phototherapy could be used effectively and safely as an alternative modality for the treatment of refractory vitiligo.

“…In 2004, fractional laser therapy was developed to reduce the side effects of total ablative lasers. Recently, the fractional CO 2 laser followed by topical steroids combined with NB-UVB or sun exposure has been proved to be effective in the treatment of refractory vitiligo [12,13]. In 2015, we also reported a triple combination treatment with fractional CO 2 laser assisting delivery of topical betamethasone solution plus NB-UVB phototherapy for refractory vitiligo and achieved some encouraging results [14].…”

“…Three months posttreatment (M3) and 6 months post-treatment (M6), the response to the treatment was assessed by two blinded dermatologists. Depending on the extent of re-pigmentation, the response to the treatment was graded as: no or minimal (<25%), moderate (25-49%), marked (50-74%), excellent (≥75%) [12,13]. Any side effect was recorded during the procedure.…”

“…Eine weitere aktuell vorgestellte Kombinationstherapie besteht aus der Verwendung eines fraktionierten CO 2 -Lasers, ergänzt durch eine Schmalband-UVB-Therapie zur Behandlung der Vitiligo [48]. In einer prospektiven, randomisierten Halbseitenvergleichsstudie wurde die komplementäre Anwendung beider Therapieformen an Patienten (n = 10) mit nichtsegmentaler, therapierefraktärer Vitiligo erprobt.…”
