“…Alginate is the most commonly investigated carrier for bioremediation applications, and has been used with numerous contaminants including chromium, cresol, nitrate, pentachlorophenol, phenanthrene, phenol, phosphate, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. 10,28,73,75,87,141,166,206,250 Alginate may also have potential for delivery of naked DNA directly into the environment for the purpose of gene bioaugmentation, 1 which is discussed in a later section.…”

“…FLUORESCENT IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION Fluorescent in situ hybridization analysis (FISH) is a relatively new technique that can be used to visualize, quantify, and identify environmental microorganisms directly without culturing. 8,151,166,179,252,260 Cells are hybridized with a probe that is tagged with a fluorescent molecule thus enabling microscopic detection. Probes are commonly designed based on 16S RNA sequences 260 but may also be designed for functional genes.…”

“…During the last three decades, several heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying bacteria had been reported, including Thiosphaera pantotropha (Robertson et al, 1988), Comamonas sp. (Patureau, 1997), Microvirgulaaero denitrificans (Patureau, 2001), Bacillus sp. (Kim et al, 2005), Providencia rettgeri (Taylor et al, 2009), Pseudomonas stutzeri , and Rhodococcus sp.…”

“…The failure of the procedure is mainly due to the loss and decay of the added bacteria, and the success relies on the maintenance, activity and proliferation of the inoculated bacteria(Bouchez et al, 2009). Retaining the heterotrophic nitrifiers in the wastewater treatment system has been examined with the use of mixed cultures(Joo, et al, 2006;Yang et al, 2011;Yao et al, 2013), or cell immobilization(Patureau et al, 2001;Gupta and Gupta, 2001;Bouchez et al, 2009).Several strategies are currently being explored to make bioaugmentation a successful technology in sites, but the most successful cases occur when the conditions can be controlled to favour the survival and prolonged activity of the exogenous microbial population (El and Agathos, 2005). Strain YB was applied in a SBR and cultivated with high concentrations of ammonium and organic matter, which could ensure the maintenance of the inoculated strain in wastewater treatment.…”
