Combining Ability Studies in Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)

Abstract: Six diverse brinjal lines were crossed in a diallel fashion (excluding reciprocals) to obtain fifteen cross combinations to study combining ability for important horticultural traits. Significant differences were observed among genotypes for all the traits studied. The parent Pusa Purple Cluster emerged as good general combiner for day to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to first harvesting, per cent fruit set and number of fruits plant-1. Whereas, the Arka Shirish was identified as good for plant … Show more

“…Hence selection of hybrids based on sca effects would excel in their heterotic effect. These crosses exhibited significant sca effect indicating the presence of dominance and epistatis type of gene action these findings were similar with the findings of [25,21,7,18,9,10,19,20,11,14,13]. The three promising hybrids are SMB115× DBL02 IBWL2001-1× Pant Rituraj and PB66×Pant Smart could be included for exploitation of hybrid vigour in brinjal.…”

“…Brinjal (Solanum melongena L., 2n = 2x = 24) belonging to the family Solanaceae, is one of the most commonly grown, important and popular vegetable crops in India. It is often referred as poor man's crop (Sharma et al, 2004) [22] , vegetable of masses (Patel and Sarnaik, 2003) [16] and king of vegetables. The cultivated brinjal is of Indian origin.…”
