Combining Experimental and Theoretical Tools to Probe Radio-Oxidation Products in Polyethylene

Abstract: Polyethylene is one of the most used polymers in a variety of sectors. A typical technique used to assess aging is infrared spectroscopy. Under oxidation, the region of the spectrum that is most studied is the one containing the carbonyl signature. However, various carbonyl groups contribute to the carbonyl peak: ketones, aldehydes, esters, lactones, carboxylic acids, and more. A usual procedure to quantify each of them is the deconvolution of experimental peaks based on experimental assignments of infrared ba… Show more

“…In addition, the peaks of DOMtM by-products are observed between 2400-1700 cm -1 , including CO 2 (2347 cm -1 ), CO (2170 and 2115 cm -1 ), aldehyde, and carboxylic acid products (1780 and 1750 cm -1 ). 32,33 In Figure 6a, Cu/MOR IE-3 exhibits significantly higher FTIR intensity for adsorbed CH 3 O* and for CH 3 OH (1015 and 1030 cm -1 ) compared to the 20 wt.% Cu/MOR catalyst (Figure 6b). 34 This emphasizes the crucial involvement of exchanged Cu 2+ in plasma-catalytic DOMtM.…”
