Combining Physiological and Metabolomic Analysis to Unravel the Regulations of Coronatine Alleviating Water Stress in Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Abstract: Drought is a major abiotic stress that restricts plants growth, development, and yield. Coronatine (COR), a mimic of JA-Ile, functions in plant tolerance to multiple stresses. In our study, we examined the effects of COR in tobacco under polyethylene glycol (PEG) stress. COR treatment improved plant growth under stress as measured by fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW). The enzyme activity assay indicated that, under osmotic stress conditions, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), asc… Show more

“…The morphological differences in the H. perforatum are shown in Figure 1 and the remarkable reduction in morphology can be seen from this image. Similar differences were also recorded in water stressed Nicotiana tobaccum [32]. In addition to morphological changes, cellular changes were determined in the present study.…”

“…In crop plants, limited fresh water for irrigation along with abrupt changes in the environment are major problems at present for obtaining better seed yields [ 1 ]. This reduction in seed yield due to water shortage is also linked with disturbances in soil physio-chemical properties that alter the biochemical and physiological activities of plants [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Water shortage reduces the bioavailability of nutrients in the rhizospher for uptake through roots due to a decrease in soil osmotic potential [ 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a special economic crop that is widely cultivated and has the characteristics of a short growth cycle, clear genetic background, and easy genetic transformation. It is also a model plant to study and elucidate various biological mechanisms (Xu et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2022). Potassium ion (K + ) is a macroelement required for plant growth and affects the yield, quality, and stress resistance of plants by participating in activities such as protein synthesis, cell osmotic regulation, photosynthesis, stomatal movement, and enzyme activation (Pettigrew, 2008;Ragel et al, 2019).…”
