Combining Seismic Noise Techniques for Landslide Characterization

Abstract: The strong topographic relief and the presence of weakly consolidated sediments create favorable conditions for the development of landslides around the eastern rim of the Fergana Basin (Central Asia). In summer 2012, a field experiment employing small aperture seismic arrays was carried out on an unstable slope, using ambient vibration recordings. The aim of the study was to constrain the seismic response of a potential future landslide and to map

“…An accurate description of the velocity structure should include this complex topography as well. However, according to Pilz et al (2014) the topographic relief can be neglected if it is small compared to the studied wavelengths, which is between approximately 8 and 24 m in our case depending on the velocity. Therefore the height di↵erence between the stable block and the slumping block was not taken into account when defining the velocity grid.…”

“…In addition, the measurement time depends on station distance, the shorter the distance, the lesser the time required (Sabra et al, 2005b;Gouedard et al, 2008). This method can be equally well used on continental (Yang et al, 2007;Bensen et al, 2009), regional (Szanyi et al, 2013;Ren et al, 2013;Dias et al, 2015), local (Renalier et al, 2010;Stankiewicz et al, 2012) and engineering-geotechnical scale (Picozzi et al, 2009;De Nisco and Nunziata, 2011;Pilz et al, 2012Pilz et al, , 2014.…”

“…In the past, such noise-based techniques have been applied to a small-scale array in Spain (Chávez-García & Luzón 2005) as well as for imaging volcanic edifices (Brenguier et al 2007;Nakata et al 2016), shallow impedance contrasts (Picozzi et al 2009), oil fields (de Ridder & Dellinger 2011;Mordret et al 2013), landslides (Renalier et al 2010;Pilz et al 2014) and the surface traces of seismic faults (Pilz et al 2013) with the latter works not only mapping surface wave velocities but directly accounting for the 3-D S-wave velocity structure.…”
