Combustion modeling in large scale volumes using EUROPLEXUS code

Abstract: Numerical benchmarks on the subjects of combustion in large scale volumes and hydrogen safety, which were performed earlier have demonstrated, that current numerical algorithms and physical models experience poor predictive capabilities at the industrial scale, both due to under-resolution and simplifying approaches to combustion modeling. This article describes a validation of the EUROPLEXUS code against several large scale experimental data sets in order to improve its hydrogen combustion modeling capabiliti… Show more

“…Present and future studies provide a solid base of experimental data for the validation of CFD models devoted to the simulation of LWR severe accident scenarios. In particular, experiments on SSEXHY facility are currently used to validate the correlation used in [9] to evaluate propagation speed of the reaction front in large geometries.…”

“…A. Velikorodny [32] proposed a new premixed combustion model and improved it by introducing the estimation of the transient integral length scale coupled with the velocity gradient field. This model can be used to verify the results of numerical calculations (over a wide range and in different combustion states).…”

“…Depuis, un modèle plus mécaniste a permis d'améliorer le caractère prédictif du modèle [7] sans pour autant résoudre toutes les situations. Citons par exemple, l'étouffement de la flamme qui n'a été prédit par aucun modèle de la communauté internationale lors de l'exercice de calcul ISP49.…”
