Combustion synthesis process for the rapid preparation of high-purity SrO powders

Abstract: A rapid, safe and simple technique for the production of high purity strontium oxide powders via a chemical combustion process is reported. The combustion reactions were performed to optimize the fuel to oxidizer ratios in the reaction mixtures required to obtain pure SrO powders by varying the molar ratio of chemical precursors and the temperature. The synthesized powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, differe… Show more

“…The TG/DTGA curves (Figure 3a, 3b) showed three weight loss of similar and specific masses. The first event occurs between 100 and 140 °C and is related to the evaporation of water adsorbed on the surface of materials 12 , the second one range to 450-580 °C was associated to the decomposition of strontium hydroxide 17 .…”

“…The FTIR results of the SrO/Fe 3 O 4 and SrO/SrFe 2 O 4 catalysts showed stretching bands in the region of 3488 and 3600 cm -1 attributed to the O-H bond of the strontium hydroxide molecule 19 . Bands at 3000 -3200 cm -1 have been attributed to hydroxyls groups present in water adsorbed 17 . The stretching and deformation bands of strontium carbonate has been observed at 1460 and 862 cm -1 , respectively 12,17 .…”

“…For this method are required high temperatures for the exothermic redox reactions and achieve the decomposition of the metal salt and the organic fuel for products formation. Therefore, extensive studies have been conducted to investigate solution-combustion synthesis of many metallic oxide powders using urea as the most commonly used chemical fuel, and some other fuels such as: starch, glycine and sorbitol (Bhatta et al, 2015;Bai et al, 2011;Devaraja et al, 2014;Granados-Correa and Bonifacio-Martínez, 2014;Mantilaka et al, 2014).…”

“…The SrO NPs prepared by Granados-Correa and Bonifacio-Martinez. in combustion method has 1-30 µm in size particles with smooth surface square alumina-like aggregates [26]. Granados-Correa's synthetic strategy involves the combustion reaction of strontium nitrate and urea at 800°C, 900°C, and 1000°C for 5 min and the product formed at 800°C and 900°C have mixture of three different phases are existing such as SrO, SrCO 3 , and Sr (OH) 2 ) and at 1000°C only SrO phase is exist.…”
