Abstract:The development history and future opportunities for structural health monitoring in fixed‐wing commercial aircraft are described. Starting from an analysis of critical past avionic events, the role of SHM in improving vehicle safety and operational efficiency is examined. Current ideas, requirements, and approaches are explored from the perspective of major large airframe manufacturers and aircraft subsystem manufacturers.
