Common atrium and the associated malformations

Abstract: Common atrium (CA) is a rare complex congenital heart disease. The studies of CA are mostly case reports, while few have been done regarding its morphological characteristics. We aimed to determine CA characteristics and diagnostic accuracy in assessing associated malformations in these patients with low-dose dual-source computed tomography (DSCT).Twenty-one pediatric and adolescent CA patients underwent low-dose DSCT. Different ventricular types and associated malformations were assessed. The diagnostic accur… Show more

“…A single atrium is a very rare condition characterized by an embryologically deficient interatrial septum. The morphology of the right atrium (crista terminalis, pectinate muscle, and atrial appendage) is in the dextral part of the common atrium, while the sinistral part has the morphology of the left atrium (smooth non-trabeculated walls and left atrial appendage) [ 3 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. The prognosis of patients with a single atrium is very poor, having mortality up to 50% even in the highest facility center, as reported by Tabbah et al [ 3 ].…”

“…Single atrium (SA) is defined as complete or near complete absence of the interatrial septum, and has clinical and hemodynamic similarities with large-size atrial septal defect of fossa ovalis type. [1][2][3] It is a rare form of congenital heart defect accounting for 0.5%-1% of all congenital heart diseases. 4 SA is a term often used interchangeably with common atrium in medical literatures.…”
