Common neurological disorders associated with psychological-behavioral problems.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of neurological syndromes and neuropsychological or cognitive-behavioral symptoms that either can present in an emergent situation or are present in the medical context and are in need of follow-up evaluation to ensure appropriate treatment. Because neurological syndromes and behavioral symptoms largely coexist and the dichotomy between the two is untenable, it is essential fot clinicians to be able to identify the types of symptoms that commonly occur and appreciate the need for medical follow-up when necessary. What is known is that many disorders that histotically fell undet the purview of the psychiatrist ate cleatly shown to have a neurological basis, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, in addition to disotders involving mood and affect, such as major depression or posttraumatic stress disorder.
