Common Poison, Uncommon Urine

Abstract: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection commonly manifests as fever, malaise, cervical lymphadenitis, pharyngitis and splenomegaly. Leucocytoclastic vasculitis is a rare complication of acute EBV infection. Clinical manifestation is often limited to the skin, but the renal, gastrointestinal or pulmonary system may be involved. 1 We report a case of leucocytoclastic vasculitis with crescentic glomerulonephritis in association with acute EBV infection.n ep_1440 617.. 618 A 14 year old male presented to us with… Show more

“…Butanol toxicity has been reported in only one instance, causing hypotension, acidosis, respiratory insufficiency, muscle hypotonia and weakness, which were resolved with supportive therapy [9]. Phenolic compounds may cause hemolysis and urinary discoloration, as observed in our patient [10]. Seizures at admission due to indoxacarb have been reported, but our patient exhibited myoclonic jerks initially and seizures only after one week.…”

“…Urinary color returned to normal on day 15 with urinary heme being negative. But phenolic compounds in the OP (or carbamate) and its metabolites can itself cause urinary discoloration [12]. Quinalphos (O,O-Diethyl O-2-quinoxalinyl phosphorothioate) is an organothiophosphate compound primarily metabolized by desertification to quinoxalin-2-ol.…”

“…Overdosage of drugs like flupirtine and zaleplon have been reported to produce green urine. Green urine has also been observed in carbofuran poisoning [ 42 ]. Phenolic derivatives of this carbamate compound and methocarbamol, a carbamyl ester, lead to green urine [ 42 ].…”

Other pesticides like imazosulfuron (2-chloro-N-[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-sulfonamide) and mefenacet (2-(2-benzothiazolyloxy)-N-methyl-N-phenylacetamide)) when consumed as a component of herbicide have produced green urine [ 7 ].…”
