Communication patterns in a psychotherapy following traumatic brain injury: A quantitative case study based on symbolic dynamics

Abstract: BackgroundThe role of psychotherapy in the treatment of traumatic brain injury is receiving increased attention. The evaluation of psychotherapy with these patients has been conducted largely in the absence of quantitative data concerning the therapy itself. Quantitative methods for characterizing the sequence-sensitive structure of patient-therapist communication are now being developed with the objective of improving the effectiveness of psychotherapy following traumatic brain injury.MethodsThe content of th… Show more

“…The power of this form of analysis should not be underestimated as, for example, in the research of Wylie et al 116,117 on interference control during action selection in Parkinson's disease and in recent quantitative studies of patterns in patient-therapist communication in psychotherapy after TBI. 118 The search for mechanisms and processes, physiological or psychological, is demanding. As previously observed, different injury events can initiate different pathophysiological processes, and a single injury event can initiate more than one pathophysiological process.…”

“…20 Because the Lempel-Ziv Complexity is influenced by the length of the zone sequence and its degree of disorder, we normalized it using 499 random surrogates to capture disorder that is independent of the number of observations. 21 The normalized complexity varies from * 0 to 1. At the extreme, 0 is obtained when the message consists of a single repeated symbol, and 1 is obtained when the sequence is truly random.…”
