Compact, high‐brightness LED illumination for projection systems

Abstract: Abstract— An arrangement consisting of a polarizing beam splitter, retarders, and dichroic mirrors provides a compact and efficient combiner for red, green, and blue light from separate LED packages. The resulting illuminating beam is unpolarized. In initial tests, a 0.55‐in. DMD engine based on this illuminator produced an on‐screen flux of 188 lm from 58 W of LED input power, using an f/2.4 pupil. Subsequent work with the same imager and LED set has resulted in a compact and efficient 300‐lm projector.

“…The optical characteristic of a single-panel projector highly depends on the illumination system. A typical illumination system is composed of the light source, the color mixing system, integral components, the beam splitter prism, and the micro-display panel [5,6]. Employing LEDs as light sources, a number of studies have been mainly focused on the integral components, including light pipes [7], lens arrays [8], compound parabolic concentrators [9], or gradual enlarging tapered light pipes [10,11], with few of them paying enough attention to the color mixing system.…”

“…Improving the brightness of such light sources is therefore a key area for manufacturers in the development of mobile projectors. 4 White LEDs have been nominated as the light source with the most potential for general applications in the 21st century. They are a type of cold light source with low power consumption, long component lifetime, and fast reaction time.…”
