This paper presents an attempt to evaluate the suitability of oil palm shell (OPS) and rubberized OPS (ROPS), an alternative bio-material, as reinforcement in kaolin. OPS was surface coated with rubber, and its water absorption potential was studied in 5 media involving water and kaolin samples (with different water contents). The water absorption data measured in the laboratory was used as an indirect measure to verify the degradability of ROPS samples when used as reinforcements in kaolin. The surface treatment of OPS with rubber was found to perform well, with around a fivefold decrease in water absorption, thus making it an ideal treatment procedure to this end. Kaolin-ROPS mixtures with different OPS and ROPS proportions (0, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight) were prepared in laboratory to evaluate their compaction behaviors. Both standard proctor compaction and mini-compaction procedures were adopted in this study to ensure applicability of the findings across a wide range of compaction methods adopted in the laboratory. Compaction curves obtained for both kaolin-OPS and kaolin-ROPS mixes showed a decreasing trend in the maximum dry density values with increasing proportions of OPS and ROPS. Optimum water content of kaolin-OPS mixtures did not show a significant variation, while kaolin-ROPS mixture showed a downward trend with increasing ROPS contents, thereby signifying improvement in the compaction characteristics after OPS reinforcement in kaolin.

Stabilizing of soils can be done with physical, chemical and hydraulic methods. Chemical stabilization is one of the most widely used method among them. In this study, low plasticity Çatalağzı clayey soil is chosen as a research material. F type of fly ash are used as a chemical additive. Soil is mixed with various amount (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) of fly ash. Index tests (hydrometer, specific gravity, liquid limit, plastic limit and standard compaction) were performed on clayey soil. Then samples prepared with optimum water content obtained from standard compaction test were exposed to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), moisture condition value (MCV) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. Curing time are selected as 0, 7 and 28 days for UCS test. Curing for CBR test includes 28 days air curing and 4 days full soaking. MCV has no curing time. Addition of fly ash increase the UCS of untreated soil. UCS of samples for S10FA, S20FA and S30FA having 7 day of curing time is 1.46, 1.51 and 1.53 times of the Çatalağzı clay of having no curing time. Rate of increase in UCS gets slow down after 7 days. MCV of S10FA is 18.3 while it is 12.2 for Çatalağzı clay which means 50% increase. Fly ash content after 10% have no significant change and even decrease slightly. CBR values are increased with an addition of fly ash also. It has been concluded that this type of fly ash increases the engineering performance of untreated clay but it is not suitable to be a subgrade for highway when taking into account of CBR value

The aim of the study reported in this paper was to develop practical correlative models capable of predicting the compaction characteristics of clay soils blended with rubber from waste vehicle tyres. Four different clay soils, ranging from intermediate to high plasticity, were adopted for the test programme and each was blended with four different percentages of ground rubber waste. The test programme consisted of cone penetration (consistency limits) and standard Proctor compaction tests. As a result of ground rubber inclusion, the consistency limits and compaction characteristics all exhibited a linear decreasing trend with increase in rubber content. The rate of decrease, however, was greater for the high-plasticity clays. Simple correlative models, linking the compaction characteristics to the consistency limits, were suggested and validated by statistical techniques. The proposed models provide a practical procedure towards predicting the compaction characteristics of ground rubber-clay blends without the hurdles of conducting laboratory compaction tests, and thus can be implemented in practice for preliminary assessments.
