Landmark based morphometrics was used to investigate sexual dimorphism and interspecific differentiation in the mustelids Martes foina and M. martes, which are typical sexual size dimorphic species. Analyses were run on 192 specimens of M. foina and 36 specimens of M. martes from central and northern Italy, by recording 19 and 40 landmarks on the dorsal skull and on the palate, respectively. Results indicate that both size and shape are important components of skull dimorphism in males and females of the two species. The skull of the stone marten males is larger, has a narrower postorbital constriction and larger molars than in females. These differences and the partial least square analysis run on shape variable and stomach contents of one sample suggest that stone marten males are better adapted to catch and kill live prey, while females seem to prey upon easier-to-catch food. Shape features involved in sexual dimorphism are similar to those involved in interspecific variation, but the two species differ also in the relative size of their canines, carnassial and molar teeth, which are likely related to different ways of acquiring and processing preys.

Acta theriol. 38: 233 -244.The food habits of the red fox Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) and the stone marten Martes foina (Erxleben, 1777) were studied in a rural hilly area in Siena county, central Italy, using faecal analysis. Both frequency of occurrence and volume of the different foods were quantified. Rodents, especially Apodemus sp., were an important prey for both species. Predation on poultry and game birds was nearly absent, whereas fruits and insects were seasonally taken by both species. Rosaceae fruits were the most eaten plant item. Within this category the fox fed mainly on Malus sp. and Pyrus sp., while the marten showed a preference for Rubus sp. and Sorbus domestica. Only fruits of Prunus spinosa were eaten in comparable quantities. Beetles were well represented in the diet of both carnivores, although they tended to concentrate on different species. Grasshoppers were preyed in small quantity. The overall diet overlap of foxes and stone martens was extensive: a surprising result, if the different body size, locomotor adaptations and living habits of these carnivores are considered.

Habitat segregation is considered to favour the coexistence of sympatric pine martens Martes martes and stone martens M. foina, the latter being displaced to agricultural and urbanised areas. Subsequent to the report of pine martens in cultivated areas of the western River Po plain (NW Italy), we reviewed all available information on the presence of this species in plain areas of northern Italy and, for two study areas, applied a non-invasive PCR-RFLP method for the identification of Martes species from faecal mtDNA.A total of 24 pine marten records were collected, grouped in the western part of the River Po plain. The number of records showed an exponential increase from 1988 to 2007, the percentage of woods in a 10 km 2 wide circular plot surrounding the location of records being inversely correlated to its distance from the 300 m a.s.l. contour line. In the two study areas, 36 out of 119 ''marten-like'' faeces were assigned to the pine marten, whilst none belonged to the stone marten. In the best monitored area, the pine marten was present almost constantly.Our results suggest that the pine marten is expanding its range to include cultivated areas which were previously considered a prerogative of the more synanthropic stone marten.
