Comparative account of allelopathic potential of essential oil of Tagetes minuta L. and its major component cis-β-Ocimene

Abstract: The study aims to explore the chemical composition of volatile essential oil of Tagetes minuta and comparison of its allelopathic potential with cis-β-ocimene, a major component of oil. T. minuta L. is an exotic aromatic plant found growing in northern plains and western Himalayas in India. The water distilled essential oil from aerial parts of T. minuta (at flowering stage) was analyzed by GC-MS. The analysis revealed 27 compounds representing 95.73% of the oil. cis-b-Ocimene (44.56%), dihydrotagetone (28.52%… Show more

“…3). The growth retardatory effects of Melaleuca oil on the test plants is in agreement with earlier studies reporting inhibitory effect of volatile oils from aromatic plants on the seedling growth of weeds (Singh et al, 2009;Rolli et al, 2014, Arora et al, 2016Ricci et al, 2017). The reduction in early growth of weeds could be due to the inhibitory effect of plant volatiles on the cell division and lowered root mitotic activity, DNA synthesis of growing root tips and disruption of the membranes (Nishida et al, 2005;Ahuja et al, 2015).…”

“…El extracto acuoso se obtuvo a partir de 5 g de polvo de las muestras trituradas (hoja, tallo y raíz) de C. clandestinus, los cuales se agregaron en 100 mL de agua destilada (Arora, 2015), relación masa/volumen (g/mL). La mezcla se homogeneizó en un agitador mecánico a 100 rpm, durante 20 min y luego se dejó reposar durante 24 h a temperatura ambiente (23 ± 2 °C) y oscuridad.…”

“…[125]. Both oil and cis-β-ocimene were strongly allelopathic against Cassia occidentalis L., a common wasteland weed but the effect of cis-β-ocimene was greater in comparison to oil [126] and maximum effect was seen on Amaranthus tricolor with complete inhibition at 1 μl/ml, whereas, Echinochloa crus-galli was least affected (amongst the tested plants) with complete inhibition at 5 μl/ml concentration [127].…”
