Comparative accuracy of the Clearing Technique, CBCT and Micro‐CT methods in studying the mesial root canal configuration of mandibular first molars

Abstract: Within the tooth population studied, accuracy of identifying mesial root canal configuration was influenced greatly by the evaluation method and the type of anatomy. Detection of type I configurations in cleared teeth was significantly lower, whilst type II configurations were detected in all specimens by both methods. In mesial roots with variable anatomical configurations, neither CBCT nor clearing methods were accurate for detecting the actual root canal anatomy.

“…Despite resolution of the available CBCT devices does not allow for a detailed imaging of fine anatomical structures of the root canal system, this diagnostic tool would be of great help for clinicians in order to identify the presence of RG (31). Considering that mandibular premolar teeth with an associated groove on the external root surface have a high incidence of C-shaped canals and bifurcations (11,14,15,18,20), previous detection of RG would suggest the presence of the anatomical complexities reported herein.…”

“…One of the limitations of this research was the use of a technology (CBCT) that is not able to provide highly detailed images compared to techniques such as micro‐CT or clearing (Sert & Bayirli , Ordinola‐Zapata et al . , ). These techniques have been used to study small structures, such as apical foramina or isthmus (Zhang et al .…”

“…Micro-computed tomography (lCT) provides high-resolution images, increasing the precision of qualitative evaluations and quantitative measurements of the root canal system. However, being time-consuming, associated with higher radiation exposure, and higher costs, it is unsuitable for patients (Peters et al 2000, Lee et al 2014, Ordinola-Zapata et al 2017. Conversely, CBCT is a 3D alternative with clinical translation.…”
