Comparative analysis of essential oils from eight herbal medicines with pungent flavor and cool nature by GC–MS and chemometric resolution methods

Abstract: Systematic comparative research was conducted on essential oils from eight traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) of pungent flavor and cool nature because the essential oils are the main active ingredients of herbs of this kind. The work was based on their component analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), on their retention indices, as well as on chemometric resolution methods. A total of 144 compounds were tentatively identified, accounting for 69.0% to 91.8% of the total essential oils. It is… Show more

“…Therefore, to enhance and stabilize the therapeutic efficacy of TCM, many studies have focused on identifying and purifying the biologically active ingredients of the medicinal substances used in TCM 18 . With developments in chemical purification technologies and mass spectrometry, the active ingredients of many TCM substances have been successively purified, and their functions have been determined 20 23 . These extracts can be used at lower doses and can provide more specific therapeutic efficacies.…”

“…Cannabis oils (Russo, 2011). This terpene is listed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) in the US, FDA Code of Federal Regulations as a flavoring agent, and can be found in common food items such as fruit juices, soft drinks, baked goods, ice cream, and pudding (Nazaroff and Weschler, 2004;Sun, 2007;Zhao et al, 2009). Limonene is directly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals when administered orally and rapidly disperses to different tissues (detectable in serum, liver, lung, kidney, and many other tissues) and quickly undergoes the metabolization processes for hydroxylation and carboxylation.…”
