Comparative analysis of storage techniques for a grid with renewable energy sources

Abstract: This paper presents the comparative analysis of different energy storage techniques used in the utility grid connected with the renewable energy sources (RESs). Energy storage is required to match the demand and supply of energy. However, with the integration of RESs to the grid increases the mismatch between the supply and demand due to the intermittence of RESs. In this paper, it is shown that the energy stor-age systems provide a better solution to the integration of different RESs to the existing grid. The… Show more

“…, where the work focuses on the efect of ambient temperature on the mode and behavior of the BESS work, more precisely on the SOC and the internal cell temperature [64]. 23 shows that the BMS algorithm considers ambient temperature as a critical parameter and adjusts the charge and discharge parameters accordingly. Te algorithm continuously monitors the battery temperature and adjusts the charge and discharge current limits to keep the temperature within a safe range.…”

“…Tese studies focused on investment costs, life span, and price of units and neglected the specifc needs of MGs in terms of response time, recharge time, and operational safety. A comparison between the nature of batteries, their chemical compositions, and their manufacturing technology [23,24] helps understand such a technology using chemical equations, materials layers, energy density, etc. However, each study focused only on one type of batteries.…”

“…FES systems have low maintenance, no carbon emission, no toxic components, high cycle life, very fast response, high cycle efficiency (90-95%), very short discharge duration, and high power density [3,11,32,33]. However, FES suffers from idling losses when the FES is on standby.…”

“…SMES system has fast response time, very short discharge time, very high efficiency, its cycle life is not affected by the DoD, and a long lifetime [2,7,33,37]. However, SMES units have high capital costs, complicated cooling systems, high daily self-discharge rates (10-15%), and a negative environmental impact due to the strong magnetic field (see Tables 2-4).…”

“…The issue of energy storage arises with the need to match the demand and supply of energy to individuals. The advent of electricity brought about more concern for the need for energy storage due to its prior nature of being used up when generated or converted to another form of energy [25]. However, new trends in energy show ways these generated energies could be stored and harnessed.…”
