Comparative and Functional Analysis of Testis-Specific Genes

Abstract: The testis is the special male gonad responsible for spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis with complex gene expressions. Characterizing and comparing the testis-specific genes in different species can reveal key genes related to testis specifical functions and provide supplementary information for study of human testis function. We screened testis-specific genes from Unigene libraries, total 317, 449 and 147 testis-specific genes were identified for human, mouse and rat, respectively. Ten from thirteen selected… Show more

“…As described in our previous studies (Liu et al, 2011(Liu et al, , 2012c, some testis-specific proteins could become cancer/testis antigens specifically expressed in certain cancers. These proteins could be used as potential cancer vaccine targets.…”

“…Of the 14 tissues examined, thyroid cancer tissue has the highest number of cancer tissue-specific proteins (103), including the well-known thyroid specific proteins TG and TPO (González et al, 2002). Of the normal tissues, the testis has the largest number of tissue-specific proteins, which reflects the complex protein expression and regulation in the testis (Liu et al, 2011(Liu et al, , 2012cHua et al, 2013). These proteins may be potential cancer biomarkers and/or physiologic treatment targets, and further studies are warranted to evaluate their underlying functions.…”

“…To eliminate the difference caused by the unequal number of ESTs in each selected libraries, DDD uses the Fisher Exact Test [13] to restrict the output for statistically significant differences (P ≤ 0.05). This approach has proven to be very useful in the study of organ-specific genes in mammal [14] and cancer cells [15]. Despite these works, some work of in silico expression studies have been conducted in wheat [16,17].…”
