Comparative efficacy study of atorvastatin vs. simvastatin, pravastatin, lovastatin and placebo in type 2 diabetic patients with hypercholesterolaemia

Abstract: Summary Although there is little information from primary or secondary prevention trials on cholesterol‐lowering medication in diabetic patients, the reduction of elevated cholesterol is widely recommended for this group. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends drug therapy in diabetic patients if low density lipoprotein (LDL)‐cholesterol remains at > 130 mg/dl, or > 100 mg/dl in patients with macroangiopathy, after dietary intervention. When cholesterol‐lowering medication is indicated, the choice … Show more

“…The present study is one of the few trials to compare the efficacy of different statins in treating hypercholesterolemia in Type 2 diabetes patients. The effects of atorvastatin on the lowering of lipids in this study are consistent with previous results in diabetic patients [6,14] and in the general population [15]. A study in nondiabetic patients with hypercholesterolemia demonstrated that treatment with atorvastatin at a dose of 10 mg once daily for 4 weeks resulted in a 41% reduction in LDL-C [15].…”

“…Finally, if the available data suggest a greater efficacy of atorvastatin in lowering cholesterol levels in type 2 diabetic patients (8,9), to our knowledge no one reported the possible effects of atorvastatin on gonadal and adrenal hormones. Moreover, studies up to date have examined the effects of statins on steroidogenesis only in males.…”

“…This is also true for atorvastatin which has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with diabetic dyslipidemia [24,25] and in those on dialysis [22]. Atorvastatin was an appropriate agent to study because of its potency and the fact that it is not cleared via the kidneys.…”
