Comparative feeding value of expeller-processed undecorticated and decorticated cottonseed cakes for growing chicks

Abstract: Experiments were made to evaluate the feeding value of undecorticated (UCS) and decorticated (DCS) cottonseed cakes and defatted DCS for egg-type starter, broiler starter and finisher diets for chicks. The results showed that UCS on average contained 22% crude protein, 0-06% free-and 0-33% bound-gossypol and 4-9% available carbohydrate. The corresponding values for DCS were 38, 0-04, 0-63 and 9-5 %, respectively. Average metabolizable energy (ME) content of UCS, DCS and defatted DCS was 7-94, 11-77 and 9-42 MJ… Show more

“…These results are consistent with those reported by Li et al (2012) and Gonzalez-Vega and Stein (2012) who observed a decline in nitrogen and energy digestibility of growing and finishing pigs fed with various sources of cottonseed meal. Free gossypol in cottonseed meal is known to have an inhibitory action on certain enzymes in bird gastrointestinal tract like pepsinogen, pepsin and trypsin by binding with their free epsilon amino groups of lysine, thus reducing protein digestibility (Sharma et al, 1978). However, in this study free gossypol levels were too low (5 to 13 ppm) to induce any detrimental effect on growth performance (Nagalakshmi et al, 2007); but the effect of free gossypol could not be excluded from the reduction of digestibility with cottonseed meal-based diets.…”

“…In contrast, nitrogen solubility of CS in 0'02 N sodium hydroxide solution did not correlate with GPV. Sharma, Lodhi & Ichhponani (1978) also failed to observe any relationship between nitrogen solubility of cottonseed cake and chick growth.…”
