COMPARATIVE GROWTH AND BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF FOUR STRAINS OF Nostoc AND Anabaena (CYANOBACTERIA, NOSTOCALES) IN RELATION TO SODIUM NITRATE

Abstract: Nitrogen concentration is an essential parameter in cyanobacterial cultures to produce enriched biomass with biotechnological purposes. Growth and biochemical composition of Nostoc LAUN0015, Nostoc UAM206, Anabaena sp.1 and Anabaena sp.2 were compared at 0, 4.25, 8.5 and 17 mM NaNO 3 . Cultures under laboratory conditions were maintained for 30 days at a volume of 500 mL. Anabaena sp.1 yielded the highest value of dry mass of 0.26 ± 2.49 mg mL -1 at 8.5 mM NaNO 3 . For chlorophyll, phycocyanin and phycoerythri… Show more

“…When carotenoids are absent, the number of phycocyanin molecules connected to the phycobilisome nucleus is strongly reduced, thus, disturbing the organization of the thylakoid membrane and affecting the microalgae growth (Tóth et al, 2015). Under the experimental conditions of this study, N. ellipsosporum seems to be associated with low concentrations of carotenoids, similar to what has been described before (Loaiza et al, 2016;Rivera-González et al, 2017).…”

“…Furthermore, according to the monitored parameters, the maximum algae growth occurred after several days of high luminosity and temperature (Figures 3 and 4). These results could rely on the fact that N. muscorum adapts very well to environmental conditions with high exposure to UV light, unlike other cyanobacteria (Singh et al, 2011;Rosales-Loaiza et al, 2016). Ge-res 3 and 4, indicate the temperature and luminosity variations in the greenhouse.…”

“…Following a 20-day period, the biomass inside the culture medium was extracted using filter paper (Whatman No. 1), with the filtrate output being used as an applied therapy (Pandey et al, 2010 andLoaiza et al, 2016).…”
