Comparative studies on the effects of a yucca extract and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) on inhibition of Venturia inaequalis in apple leaves

Abstract: The effect of an extract of Yucca schidigera on the control and infection process of the apple scab pathogen, Venturia inaequalis, was examined and compared with the chemical resistance inducer, acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM). In seedling assays, both materials significantly reduced apple scab symptoms and pathogen sporulation on leaves and both showed similar control efficacies as the reference treatment, sulphur. Whereas yucca extract and sulphur gave significant inhibition of conidial germination in vitro, ASM … Show more

“…A satisfactory level of downy mildew control in grapevine has been obtained by using Yucca schidigera and Salvia officinalis extracts as well as Trichoderma harzianum (Dagostin et al 2011). Likewise, Yucca schidigera extracts allowed a good level of scab control in apple (Bengtsson et al 2009). Application of vinasse on leaf residues stimulated leaf degradation and reduction of Venturia inaequalis ascospore production, offering a good management option in apple orchards (Heijne et al 2007).…”

“…The biological effect of this desert plant has been demonstrated against plant pathogens such as Pythium ultimum , Fusarium oxysporum , Alternaria solani , Colletotrichum coccodes and Verticillium dahliae in amended agar plate assays (Chapagain et al. , 2007) and in planta against Venturia inaequalis and related foliar pathogens of apple and pear (Bengtsson et al. , 2007, 2009).…”

“…The highest reduction of pest severity by the volatile oils could be observed on variety 'Jonaveld'. According to Berngtsson et al [4,5], he variation of effectiveness of the same oil on the different varieties might be explained by the influence of plant defence mechanism. In the minimum effective dose test at Nógrád, cinnamon reduced significantly the amount of infected leaves even in the lower applied concentration (0.2%).…”
