Comparative Study of Blood Cross Matching Using Conventional Tube and Gel Method

Abstract: Background: Conventionally tube method is used for compatibility and cross matching in transfusion medicine. Methods: A comparative study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of conventional tube and gel technique. Result: Compatibility testing was performed on 1000 blood samples by conventional test tube method and DiaMed gel method. The results were analysed. Conclusion: The gel method was found to be a rapid and reliable procedure without controls. There was no requirement of wash phase in indirect anti… Show more

“…[22][23][24] In particular, its use in human medicine to identify weak alloantibodies against Rh and other blood groups as well as cross-match incompatibilities (with and without the addition of human antiglobulin [Coombs'] reagent) has improved antibody recognition and titer strength determination when using the gel column compared with the traditional tube. [25][26][27] In people, gel-typing uses mostly monoclonal reagents and is commercially available for various blood types. Similarly, this gel column technology has been recently introduced for DEA 1.1 and feline AB typing using monoclonal antibodies, 15,17,19 and in the present study its application for extended typing for DEA 3, 4, 7, and Dal as well as cross-matching was investigated and found to be useful.…”

“…Thus, compatibility testing with gel method can be considered as a method with simple, fast and stable stages so that it can be documented and provide objective results. [3][4][5] Procedure of the compatibility testing is divided into two stages, namely major compatibility examination in which the donor's erythrocytes are mixed with the patient's serum and minor compatibility examination in which the patient's erythrocytes are mixed with the donor's plasma. 4 The International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) has introduced 285 blood group antigens.…”
