Comparative Study of Combustion, Performance and Emission Characteristics of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil–Biobutanol Fuel Blends and Diesel Fuel on a CI Engine

Abstract: This article is a study of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and Butanol Fuel blends, which are mixed in three different proportions (HVOB5, HVOB10 and HVOB20), and the comparison of their combustion (in-cylinder pressure, pressure rise and ROHR), performance (fuel consumption, BSFC and BTE) and emission (CO2, NOX, HC and Smoke) characteristics with those of fossil diesel fuel. In the wake of finding an alternative fuel that requires little to zero modifications to the existing IC engines, it is necessary to account … Show more

“…Currently, because ethanol is used in blends with gasoline on a large scale, marketed under the name of gasohol, many studies have investigated its use in internal combustion engines. Today, due to its good combustion properties, butanol can be a viable alternative fuel for internal combustion engines, for diesel engines [3,4] and for spark ignition engines [5,6]. Butanol can be blended with diesel fuel or with biodiesel; the amelioration of the biodiesel's combustion properties at butanol use can assure the improvement of the diesel engine operation [3,4].…”

Butanol can be blended with diesel fuel or with biodiesel; the amelioration of the biodiesel's combustion properties at butanol use can assure the improvement of the diesel engine operation [3,4]. For example, Lapuerta et al [5] used renewable normal butanol, n-butanol, to replace the ethanol in blends with gasoline in order to eliminate the disadvantages of ethanol use, like hydroscopic issues, in the gasohol fuel.…”

“…The issue of motor fuel quality is currently a carefully monitored area (Gardyński and Kałdonek, 2020;Mikulski et al, 2022;Rayapureddy et al, 2022). The increase in motorization and progress in the development of power units require high quality fuels without undesirable additives while maintaining the prescribed parameters and quality indicators (Kamiński et al, 2021).…”

“…The control parameters of internal combustion engine power systems have a significant impact on their operation. Appropriate adjustment of the parameters of the gasoline and gas supply control algorithm affects the emission of toxic components of the exhaust gas [ 11 , 12 , 13 ], and also affects the dynamic parameters of the car [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Research on the selection of injection parameters and optimization of the EGR of an engine fueled with a biofuel admixture is presented in [ 17 ].…”
