Comparative Study of Different Approaches for Islanding Detection of Distributed Generation Systems

Abstract: The issue of unintentional islanding in grid interconnection still remains a challenge in grid-connected, Distributed Generation System (DGS). This study discusses the general overview of popular islanding detection methods. Because of the various Distributed Generation (DG) types, their sizes connected to the distribution networks, and, due to the concern associated with out-of-phase reclosing, anti-islanding continues to be an issue, where no clear solution exists. The passive islanding detection technique i… Show more

“…The remote IDM based system reads the status of various circuit breakers (CBs), and serves as inputs for a central computing processor and based on the output of the islanding algorithms, islanding detection is done. Hence, remote methods were more reliable than local detection methods [32]. Methods such as power line signaling and phasor measurement unit (PMU) were some of the remote IDMs available in the literature.…”

“…DPG that are interconnected with the grid may be affected by islanding issue due to grid disturbances, and identifying these will be a challenging task. Islanding is a process where the grid is removed from the network, and the entire load is directed to the DPG system that is still connected [5,6]. So, it is essential to detect these islanding events and respond in time for a resilient DPG.…”

“…So, it is essential to detect these islanding events and respond in time for a resilient DPG. Otherwise, the islanding issues will pose many unavoidable problems that include, power quality, voltage stability, energy loss, and damage the power assets [6]. In some cases, due to grid or load side disturbances, the electrical lines might fall, which needs immediate reconstruction.…”

“…As the nature of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is fluctuating and highly dependent on weather, the generated energy is also unpredictable, which can be addressed via the integration of storage devices or/ and by interconnecting multiple energy resources [7][8][9]. An optimized hybrid energy system is quite promising techniques on behalf of cost, power quality and reliability to provide the electricity to the area where an expansion of national utility grid system is quite complicated and expensive [10]. It can be made more efficient and costeffective by reducing the disadvantages associated with these technologies [7].…”
