Comparative Study of Electrical Stimulation of the Heart with VDD and DDD Pacemakers as to the Evolution to Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: IntroductionThe pacemaker implantation VDD is considered simpler, faster, less expensive and causes fewer complications compared to DDD. However, the VDD pacemaker has not been widely used in many centers, perhaps for fear of dysfunction of the sinus node and the reduction of atrial sensitivity by the pacemaker during follow-up after implantation.ObjectiveTo compare patients with DDD and VDD pacemakers regarding the evolution of chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) and length of stay outside this postoperative arr… Show more

“…In the incidence study conducted by Campos et al, a minimum period of two months was established as an inclusion criterion, thus avoiding cases of previous asymptomatic AF detected after implantation. 9 As shown in Graph 1, all arrhythmic events were detected after an interval of three months after the implant procedure, which runs in line with the current literature.…”

“…Inside the overall population, 4% switched the pacing mode due to permanent AF, a value like the 6.36% found by Nelson de Campos et al, and less than the 10.42% found in DDD group in the same study. 10 We may speculate that this difference in "de novo" AF incidence might be related to atrial lead implantation and subsequent chronic irritation in DDD pacemakers. 4…”
