Comparative Study of Novel Ultradeformable Liposomes: Menthosomes, Transfersomes and Liposomes for Enhancing Skin Permeation of Meloxicam

Abstract: In the present study, novel ultradeformable liposomes (menthosomes; MTS), deformable liposomes (transfersomes; TFS) and conventional liposomes (CLP) were compared in their potential for transdermal delivery of meloxicam (MX). MTS, TFS and CLP were investigated for size, size distribution, zeta potential, elasticity, entrapment efficiency and stability. In vitro skin permeation using hairless mice skin was evaluated. Vesicular morphology was observed under freeze-fractured transmission electron microscopy (FF-T… Show more

“…Zeta potential was used to study these vesicles' surface charge, which was affected by the total net charge of the vesicle components and pH of the hydration buffer. The isoelectric point (pI) of MX is 2.6 [29], which is lower than the pH of hydration buffer (pH 5.5). Therefore, MX is in the negatively charged form.…”

“…Recently, there has been an increasing interest toward delivering non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) transdermally using various vesicular carriers such as liposomes (Jain et al, 2005;Szura et al, 2014), niosomes (El-Menshawe and Hussein, 2013), transferosomes (Duangjit et al, 2013(Duangjit et al, , 2014 and ethosomes (Bragagni et al, 2012;Ghanbarzadeh and Arami, 2013) to circumvent the problems associated with their oral administration. Several mechanisms were reported to explain the ability of the aforementioned colloidal vesicles to enhance transdermal drug delivery.…”

“…In a further study, the effects of various carriers including menthosomes, transfersomes and liposomes on increasing skin permeability of MX were evaluated. The 12 h cumulative amount of MX across hairless mouse skin from menthosomes, transfersomes and liposomes were 3.5, 3.0 and 1.5 mg/cm 2 , respectively (Duangjit et al, 2014a).…”
