Comparative Study of SPA Mud from “Bacino Idrominerario Omogeneo dei Colli Euganei (B.I.O.C.E.)–Italy” and Industrially Optimized Mud for Skin Applications

Abstract: The term “Salus per aquam (SPA) therapies” refers to therapeutic pathways that includes mud therapy. The therapeutic efficacy of a peloid depends on its chemical and mineralogical composition, as well as its technological properties. Considering the increasing use of clay-based products, it becomes essential to characterize peloids from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. Therefore, this research project aimed to develop a protocol that allows characterization of the chemical-physical composition of … Show more

“…An analysis of the available data on the microaggregate composition shows that the low content of the sandy fraction of the peloids of lakes Alzhansor, Khakisor, Big Sor of Western Kazakhstan, lakes Kisloye and Stanovoye of Northern Kazakhstan, as well as the high content of the fine clay fraction of the mud of the Kossor deposit of Southern Kazakhstan indicates their long-term maturation. (Bergamaschi et al, 2020 ). In terms of the quantitative composition of the clay fraction, the peloids of Northern Kazakhstan are similar to the peloids of Sečovlje Salina Piran Bay, Slovenia (Glavaš et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Grain size analysis offers several important considerations, with the first being the assessment of its suitability for skincare products. Ideally, a product should have the lowest possible sand content since coarser fractions can potentially cause skin irritations or injuries [119] (and references therein). Furthermore, a higher clay content is generally preferred over a silty component.…”

“…Their heavy metal content was studied by comparison with commercial cosmetic mud and was found to be higher than in commercial mud; however, no allergic reactions were detected. A proposal to establish a protocol for effective control of these types of natural products has been put forward [30].…”
