Comparative Study of Sterol Ester Synthesis using Thermomyces Lanuginosus Lipase in Stirred Tank and Packed‐Bed Bioreactors

Abstract: A comparative study was done on the production of different sterol esters using a stirred tank batch reactor (STBR) and packed bed reactor (PBR) using Thermomyces lanuginosus (Lipozyme TLIM) enzyme, a commercially immobilized lipase. Different oils were used as the sources of particular fatty acids, e.g., fish oil for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), linseed oil for alpha linolenic acid (ALnA) and mustard oil for erucic acid. Reaction parameters, such as substrate molar ratio, reaction temperature a… Show more

“…Capric acid-enriched mustard oil was prepared by the reaction between capric acid and mustard oil in a packed bed bioreactor using lipase TLIM as a catalyst ( 17 ) . Unreacted fatty acid was separated from the oil by vacuum distillation.…”

“…Therefore, the use of an immobilized enzyme could be a good choice as it can provide enzyme reusability, hence reduces operational costs. It can also reduce enzyme contamination and facilitate easy separation of the products (Sengupta et al 2010). In addition, the stability, activity and reusability of enzymes can also be improved by immobilization.…”

“…The use of other types of bioreactors, such as packed bed, may also be useful for continuous process operation to improve the esterification performance [ 56 ]. Bioreactors with non-mechanical agitation systems may provide better enzyme protection than that usually observed in a stirred tank reactor by mechanical damage due to the high shear created by the use of the impeller [ 57 , 58 ]. The efficient and low-cost method for the separation and purification of KAD from the remaining substrates and other by products should be developed.…”
