Comparative study of the fermentative characteristics of inulin and different types of fibre in rats inoculated with a human Whole faecal flora

Abstract: It is known that the physico-chemical characteristics of fibre modify their fermentation characteristics in the colon. Previously we showed the varying effects of inulin and different types of fibre on the hepatic and intestinal xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (XME) in initially germ-free rats inoculated with a human, methanogenic, whole-faecal flora (Roland et al. 1994). The aim of the present work was to assess whether or not these effects could be related to differences in production of fermentation metabol… Show more

“…This protocol indicated a bioantimutagenic mode of action, which reinforced the data from the pre-treatment protocol and the remarks made by other authors in other biological assays (Roland et al, 1993(Roland et al, , 1994(Roland et al, , 1995(Roland et al, , 1996Mauro et al, 2013). This protocol suggests and confirms the action of inulin modulating the repair system.…”

“…This suggests that inulin can modulate repair enzymes of the cellular DNA as suggested by Roland et al (1993Roland et al ( , 1994Roland et al ( , 1995Roland et al ( , 1996 and Mauro et al (2013). Therefore, we supposed that the inulin entered the meristematic cells of A. cepa and modulated the repair system, making it more efficient when preventing or repairing the damage caused by the alkylating action of MMS.…”

“…Studies examining CA formation have mainly been conducted in vitro by using human faecal inocula, or in vivo using animal models. The rat is the most common model when studying the CA formation in vivo, although there are also some studies available in pigs (Berggren et al, 1993;Roland et al, 1995;Brown et al, 1997;Djouzi and Andrieux, 1997;Bird et al, 2000;Henningsson et al, 2002Henningsson et al, , 2003Nilsson and Nyman, 2005). Studies in man have mainly been performed by measurements of CAs in faeces and have been questioned on the premises that such measurements do not give information regarding the formation of CAs in proximal colon where most of the fermentation actually takes place.…”
